2022 Bookshelf

Full disclosure: I did not actually write this post at the beginning of 2023 because I never got around to it even though these are some of my favorite posts to write. Nevertheless, I want this recorded for the annals of time, so here goes.

I migrated my data from Goodreads to Storygraph at the beginning of the year and decided the era of spreadsheeting everything was over for me—not because I don’t love spreadsheeting but because Storygraph organizes the data for me with very little effort. Storygraph is also super user-friendly. Hands down my favorite feature of Storygraph is that I can rate books by .25 increments. This has been very freeing as a reader. Here’s some fun data about 2022:

A couple notes about the data:
1) I read 212 books total.

2) I am still a very generous star giver (but this will look way different next year when I have a whole year of giving out incremental ratings vs. whole star ratings).

3) I leaned fiction over nonfiction this year but not by as wide a margin as I thought! And overall, I rated the nonfiction much higher than fiction.

4) I was shocked to learn that I read 54 memoirs in 2022.

5) The longest book I read was Far from the Tree by Andrew Solomon. The shortest book I read was 84, Charing Cross Road by Helene Hanff. The average number of pages per book read was 326 pages.

6) I read the most books/pages in January (8,914 pages), and my highest ratings happened in May with an average of 4.37 stars.

Some of my favorite books of the year (in the order I finished them) were:

Looking forward to 2023, I don’t know if I will read as many books as I did in 2022 because the pace of our life is going to be a bit different, but I will continue to share with you when I’ve read a good one. I hope you’ll do the same for me. Find me on Storygraph if you are super into data like me. Happy reading, friends!
